Nationals recall Maya to start against Padres

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Washington Nationals recalled right-handed pitcher
Yunesky Maya(notes) from Triple-A Syracuse to start Sunday’s game against San Diego.

Maya takes Tom Gorzellany’s place in the Nationals’ rotation. Gorzellany was
placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday with an inflamed left elbow.

The Cuban-born Maya, who signed with the Nationals last summer, was 1-4 with
a 3.79 ERA in nine starts with Syracuse. He was 0-3 with a 5.88 ERA in five
starts with Washington in 2010.

Nationals place Gorzelanny on DL to rest elbow

WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals placed left-hander Tom Gorzelanny on the on the 15-day disabled list with an inflamed left elbow after Friday night’s 2-1 victory over the San Diego Padres. The move is retroactive to May 24.

Gorzelanny, who was scheduled to start Sunday, is 2-4 with a 4.25 ERA in nine starts.

The Nationals have not announced who will start in Gorzelanny’s place.

Washington Nationals put RHP Todd Coffey on DL, recall Collin Balester

WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals have placed right-handed reliever Todd Coffey on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain and recalled right-hander Collin Balester from Triple-A Syracuse.

Coffey is 1-0 with a 6.23 ERA in five appearances this season. The move before Sunday’s game against Milwaukee is retroactive to April 9.

Balester has pitched five scoreless innings in three appearances for Syracuse. Last season, he was 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 17 games for the Nationals.

Washington Nationals put star third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on DL

WASHINGTON — The Washington Nationals have put third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a strained abdominal muscle and recalled catcher Jesus Flores from Triple-A Syracuse.

This is Zimmerman’s second trip to the DL since arriving in the majors in 2005. Tuesday’s move is retroactive to Sunday.

Zimmerman is hitting .357 with a triple, homer and four RBIs in eight games.

Flores gives the Nationals three catchers, along with Ivan Rodriguez and Wilson Ramos.

Nationals unconditionally release RHP Tyler Walker

Right-handed reliever Tyler Walker has been unconditionally released by the Washington Nationals. Walker went on the 15-day disabled list in June, then had season-ending surgery on his pitching shoulder in late July. He went 1-0 with a 3.57 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 35 1-3 innings, all in relief, in 2010.

Nationals’ Strasburg throws side session

Stephen Strasburg threw a side session Saturday and is set to rejoin the Washington Nationals’ rotation on Tuesday night against the Florida Marlins. The right-hander was scratched minutes before his scheduled start against Atlanta on July 27 and was diagnosed with shoulder inflammation. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list for the first time two days later, retroactive to July 22.
